People reuse the same phrases when speaking of The Emergency. The world around him seems to confirm those suspicions. He believes The Emergency to be a fictional event invented by the mysterious Sender and reinforced by subliminal messages hidden in every television and radio signal. Benedict (Tony Hale, thanks Janet!) searches for children who can save the world. And not all the tests are what they seem.ĭisney’s The Mysterious Benedict Society is based on the book by Trenton Lee Stewart, NYT bestseller and the first in a trilogy that’s sold over three million copies. Getting in would give the orphaned, brilliant, odd egg Reynie an opportunity he desperately needs. The elite Boatwright Academy is holding a special exam for new applicants. Only two things are certain no one is at the wheel, and everyone is frightened.īut perhaps Miss Perumal can give Reynie a chance. They speak of The Emergency, an amorphous event on every front page and every mind. The ache of someone who can’t give a comforting answer to the child they love. In the moments after we see her face take on an expression recognizable to every parent, grandparent, teacher, anyone who’s had to respond to a child’s difficult question. “I don’t remember it that way,” Miss Perumal responds. This question is asked of Miss Perumal shortly after we meet her and her young student, Reynard Muldoon. The Times.“Was it always like this? Bad news all the time?” Considering I have so many online friends, I think this arrangement would work out just fine.Ĭan you imagine a group video chat with Charlotte and Vendetta? Hoo. So maybe it’s safer to hang out with them from a safe, guarded distance. The real question is, would I be able to hang out with either of them WITHOUT the other showing up, anyway? They’re kind of a package-deal, are they not? I even had a dream I wrote about once where Charlotte and Vendetta were still dukin’ it out hundreds of years into the future. So there goes my only reservation about spending an extended period of time with Charlotte. (Which is apparently me.) I wouldn’t be able to say that about some of my own cousins, but I could easily say that about Charlotte. Or Guybrush Threepwood.) You know what? I’m probably way off-base there Charlotte’s a super-considerate and thoughtful person who, in-spite of momentary lapses in memory, would be accommodating to, say, someone with a headache. Well, perhaps I’m misjudging her, though– Charlotte CAN hold her breath for nine hours. Even as I write this, I’m pretty exhausted, and I don’t know if Charlotte can so much as sit still for very long. (Maggie, on the other hand, seems VERY smart and can make that call.) The only issue is the sustained amount of energy. And I’ve often felt a little inept or slow-on-the-uptake (or the downgive)– so I have no right to say, “Charlotte’s dumb,” of myself. Spontaneously bursting into musical numbers? Always down for it. So I would not be in physical danger around Charlotte, which is more than I can say for Vendetta, with or without the improbable ability to breathe life into malicious creatures of her own design.Īnd as for Charlotte’s cheer, I’ve got that in spades, myself. On the other hand, right off the bat, there’s a lot less to be worried about when it comes to Charlotte? Unlike other characters of her nature, I can’t think of an example of Charlotte’s comically timed ineptitude hurting anyone OTHER than a fiend. So hanging out with Vendetta isn’t out of the question. (Baby steps!) And I’ll admit, I’ve been bullied a good deal in my life, but I also have somehow worked my own way around to being friends with the very same people who have bullied me. Obviously, a more reasonable analogy for what a Vendetta-type person might be in real life would just be a class bully, rather than some sort of golem-controlling super-genius who’s probably working their way around to world domination. Hanging around a real-life Vendetta would be very dangerous. Wow, what an interesting question from an interesting Anonymous! Once again, if any of you Anonymouses wanna be friends, alls you gotta do is attribute yourself.
